    [Locals] Beer Tasting!
We have another beer tasting this Friday, per usual, and we'll have beer there, per usual.

This Friday's theme is "Seasonal Ales" (namely, winter seasonal ales) and I'll have Bell's White Winter Ale and Pyramid Snow Cap Winter Warmer Ale.

I'll note that these are technically two different types of beer. I'd just never heard of a "Winter Warmer Ale" before so I wasn't aware.

Just a Reminder (Since I've not had one in a while)
I haven't thrown one of these in a while and feel like gettin' all of mah furry friends together and drinking (well, with those that are legal to drink) until we poop in our pants. Who is with me for a little hedonistic indulgence? Who wants to partaaaaaaaaaay?!

    How about this:

    When: November 7th - 8th

Where: My town-house. PM if you wanna come but don't know where this is.

    What: An old skool partay, Dragoon style. This means there will be a good deal of... um... stuff on hand. Feel free to drop by and not drink, but keep in mind you will be in the presence of alcohol and lots of it. I also have a decent home entertainment system for those who like that sorta thing... and a few board games... and another TV with a Nintendo. Also worth noting, I have a massive liquor collection and I'm openin' it up to y'all. This means free booze for those booze hounds in the audience. I think I've even used up most of the cheap swill I got when I first moved in here and now I'm down to the good stuff that I actually like to drink. };=8}

Also, I'll probably have a 5L party keg (or two) of German Beer on hand, for those who like Schwarzbier and the like. Mmmm... Schwarzbier...

    In Other News:

My new iPhone is now alive and kickin'.

This Friday's beer tasting will be themed on brown ales, since I've been drinking a fair number of those lately. Beers on hand will be Bell's Best Brown and Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale.

500 pushups and ready to go!
Ok, so I did, like, 500 pushups yesterday. Helping to train a kung-fu student in pushups before his PT test. My arms and chest feel awesome, needless to say, and I get kung-fu today and tomorrow too!

I've been feeling a little cabin fever lately so I'm hopin' next weekend's planned camping trip with [info]abbarach will go off smoothly. I need to get out camping.

Ok, today I got a couple 'a beers for tasting. They were Schlafly Tripel and Brother David's Tripel.

I'm gettin' that Schlafly 'cause I heard someone *AHEM*[info]roscoreis*/AHEM* say they wanted to try it.

    Stupid Boost techs.
I'm going to make this work...

I know why Boost has been disallowing me from activating my new (to me) phone... and I plan on circumventing their issues. Yay for hackin'... this is a challenge, and as much as I hate companies that act unethically I also enjoy a good challenge, so I'm not sure if I should be thankful or annoyed, so I'll be both.

QPST and other tools shall make this work... if anyone has any advice on this undertaking of reprogramming my phone feel free to chime in!

    [Locals] Malt Liquor Tasting!
I believe I have a decent collection of what we might call liquid assets this week. A nice set of my favorite malt liquors so I can feel trashy for a night, like back when I was in undergrad. I've got... Magnum 40 (40oz bottle!), St. Ides (also in a 40oz bottle!), and the coupe de grace, Steel Reserve (three 22oz bottles!). I'm gonna re-zero my taste-buds with this stuff.

Remember ye who come to my Friday Night "Beer Tasting" this fair warning from Hunter S. Thompson... "Good people drink good beer."

Therefore this upcoming Friday is gonna make me a bad person, right?

Oh, and for those with any interest in Bourbon... I picked up a bottle of George T. Stagg. Primarily to reward myself for my nostalgia and just so I could give it a try. I now officially have more good bourbon than your average bar (and even some good ones)!

    [Locals] IPA Extravaganza!
This Friday's beer tasting is to follow the local CoffeeCon (starting at 7pm at Common Grounds) and will involve high-alcohol content IPAs (i.e. 10%+ ABV). We'll be having Boulder Beer's Mojo Rising, Dogfish Head 120min IPA and Avery's Maharaja.

If you wanna just attend the beer tasting gimme a call or text this Friday (comment with e-mail if you want the phone number) and I'll let you know when the beer tasting shall be, i.e. I'll announce that I'm leaving Common Grounds to return for beer tasting.

    Schlafly Oktoberfest

I also got new spectacles today.

You must be an axial ligand...
...because I have the urge to interact with you.

This shirt rocks my socks and I'd totally get it if it wasn't perhaps just a little too nerdy, even for me.

I also got to try a couple of beers tonight as I'm havin' guests and we're partying a little so here are my reviews:

Dogfish Head Immort Ale - One of the best beers I've ever had, bar none. I'd give this one an A+. I love its combination of complex flavors, texture, and sheer alcohol-ic-ness. Although I think the burnt wood flavor on the initial entry is the real winner. Although, perhaps, I might feel less generous if it weren't for the company, etc... I still think that at the very least this is an "A" class beer. It reminds me of a great port that I used to have when I'd visit [info]sirius_de_lune.

O'Fallon Pumpkin Beer - A pretty mediocre flavored beer... very thin with just one flavor really highlighted. It is, no doubt, very pumpkin-ish (with just a hint of complementary cinnamon) but this is only really good if you're looking for pumpkin coors, 'cause that's what it tastes like. I'd give it a C+, but only because I'm being generous tonight.

Silence is a Stone in my Mouth
Had a hard drive on my desktop crash on me last night... it was a 60gb drive from, like, the early 2000s, and it wasn't surprising that it died (I mean a 7 year old hard drive is, like, 100000 in computer years) the problem being that since this was the only EIDE (PATA) hard drive in the system Windows (or, more likely, the BIOS) in its mighty glory decided to put the boot record there... so now I get to reinstall the O/S yippie-kai-yay!

Anyway, will be scarce for just a little longer... which is sad, 'cause I have some folks I wanna talk with... then again I hardly think the broken computer is gonna be our principal barrier to communication.

    [Locals] Friday Beer Tasting!
This week's beer theme is ESB (Extra Special / Strong Bitters) and the beers shall be...

    Rogue Brutal Bitter
    Avery 14'ER ESB

Also had an Avery with a very high alcohol content recommended to me by the clerk. I think it may have been this one, but I'm not entirely sure... it is the only one that met his description although the name seems a little off.

    Eh.

    Havin' some Beer
Ok, so I'm having some beers this week, during the week, since I'm going to my boss's, daughter's b-day party this Friday (i.e. this will probably interfere with my beer-tasting).

Decided to try a couple of seasonal ales...

Magic Hat Roxy Rolles (Ale) - Sweet, with strong notes of apricot and other, similar, fruit (e.g. peach, etc.)... but mostly just apricot. It's a very drinkable beverage, especially if you're into sweet stuff. I'd give it an A-.

Blue Moon Honeymoon Ale - Pretty mediocre as it has a very subdued and simple palate. It has a sort of milky texture that is very soothing and it's just sweet enough that I imagine it would be great after some spicy Indian food. Overall not terribly good, but very palatable. I'll give it a B-.

Hungry Spirit Ain't Hungry For Long
I've been thinking a lot about my grasping attachments recently... partly because I've known them to a problem for a while (see previous entries), I mean, they are a chronic problem on my part... and this problem was really pointed out by how well an image I saw at AC's art auction stuck with me more than I thought it would.

I like the use of food as a symbol here because it's a good allegory. Much like food, we need some degree of controlled attachment to remain a (meaningful) part of this world and to actually care about what's going on around us. That said, too much food and too many attachments can slow us down and make us heavy with emotion ("pregnant" is a term that has also been used and is also applicable).

With these things in mind I've been trying to get myself more involved with dharma reading and the like to strip myself of the grasping attachments that are clouding my mind and slowing my actions recently. I really do want to get back to some fundamentals and rebuild my life... hence my previous post re-planning my life after meditation on my return from my vacation.

Also, for what it's worth, I passed out at around 11pm yesterday from work fatigue and a couple beers. I may seem like an impenetrable fortress of strength sometimes, but I'm really not. Really. I sleep, I cry, I suffer just like everybody else. I just make an effort to think about how I can reduce my suffering, and yours.

Be mindful. Be safe. I care about you.

Oh, and in other news: I'm now on Steam as dragoon3428. Decided to start playin' TF2.

Ok, after, like, two years I finally changed out the driver's side mirror on the Cavalier with this black number... perhaps I should change out both sides as I like the look of a yellow car with black mirrors quite a bit.

[Locals] Friday Beer Tasting! (& a thought)
Ok, this week I decided to go with a good standby and old favorite... the Unibroue tasting! This week's selections are 17 and Terrible.

Aside from that, lately, I've been feelin' a lot like Adrian Veidt from the Watchmen. Usually vacillating between that and feeling disconnected, like Jon. Either way I don't really mind the feeling and could do for a bit more of it, in fact... perhaps the clean break that I'm thinking of really is what I need. Either way I definitely need more "me" time.

    Ozymandias
    by Percy Bysshe Shelley

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things.
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away
